Dance journey

I started dancing at the tender age of four at Legs Dance Studio in Canberra, with primary ballet like so many little girls. From there my love of dancing flourished. I then got into dance at my primary school while I also started and fell in love with tap dancing. From there it was a rapid incline to jazz, solo’s, performance troupes and eventually into hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, acrobatics, cabaret and show girl, singing, drama and national character.

I danced competitively with Legs for over 10 years and was fortunate enough to get to travel all over the country and world with dance including being a dancer of the year finalist at Showcase National Dance Championships in Queensland multiple years, travelling to Kuala Lumpur and China as some highlights. I started teaching at the age of 17 when I was still learning and competing myself, and aspired to become a performer at Disneyland however a back injury quickly changed this dream.

After finishing school, I went on to university to study Dietetics and was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to undertake the first ever Glen Wood teachers course to become a qualified Glen Wood tap teacher. Throughout university I continued teaching classes at Southern Cross Performing Arts in Wagga Wagga, mainly specialising in jazz, tap, solo’s and performance troupes. I also adjudicated many eisteddfods on the east coast including Campbeltown Spring Song and Dance Festival, and Wollongong Song and Dance Festival.

I took a break from dancing and teaching for a few years as my full time job working for the Commonwealth Department and Aged Care really picked up. Having recently moved from Canberra to Adelaide I was delighted to find such a welcoming environment as Dragonfly Dance. I have a passion for tap, when else are you allowed to make a lot of noise and not get into trouble for it?
